1. 1Gently mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder in a large bowl. Don't overwork the meat.
2. 2Divide meat into 6 equal portions and form into patties about 3/4-inch thick. Make a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent bulging.
3. 3Heat grill or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties 4-5 minutes per side for medium doneness, flipping only once.
4. 4If using cheese, add slices during the last minute of cooking and cover to melt. Toast buns on the grill during this time.
5. 5Assemble burgers with desired toppings and serve immediately.
